Cinema Latino: Azúcar Amarga (Cuba)

Directed by Leon Ichaso, Bitter Sugar (Azúcar Amarga in Spanish) takes a very personal and gritty point of view of Cuba in the 1990s.

Set in a time when traditional communist values are beginning to crumble, the film tells the story of Gustavo, an engineering student with revolutionary ideals, and his relationships with those around him.

Filmed in black and white, the movie has a strong emphasis on imagery to artistically present a visual Cuba.

While Gustavo dreams of moving to Prague to study aeronautical engineering, his girlfriend, Yolanda, would like to emigrate to Miami to improve her dancing prospects.

Similarly suffering from Cuba’s economy is Gustavo’s father, a psychiatrist who earns four times as much money when working as a jazz pianist in a night club than in his medical practice.

In direct contrast to Gustavo is his brother, Bobby, is a weirdo, a rock musician who finds himself in trouble with the authorities for his blatant opposition to Castro’s regime along with his rebellious appearance.

One of Bobby’s concerts is yet again raided by the police and Gustavo is removed from a foreigners’ bar leading Gustavo to rethink his political opinions. Bobby, meanwhile, is pushed further into revolt.

‘Bicho raro’ (lit. rare bug) means someone who is an oddball, a weirdie, an oddbod, someone bizarre. It reffers to people of strange character or habits unusual to others. [Warning: The word “bicho” has a negative connotation in some places.]

(“Your friend is a freak, he just wants to be in the library.”)

(“Don´t call me a weirdo just because I don’t play football.”)
