Amores Perros (Love’s a Bitch) is widely considered to be the most famous Mexican movie of recent times. Released in 2000, it is the first of three movies in the Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s death trilogy.
The movie is divided into three separate stories whose characters become linked through a car crash in Mexico City. Dogs play an important role in each of the stories in order to portray the main theme of loyalty. Through their dark and often horrific lives, the main characters act out their own loyalties, disloyalties and cruelty to each other and animals.
The movie begins with the tale of brother- and sister-in-law Octavio and Susana. Octavio is madly in love with Susana, his brother’s wife, and is angry by the way his brother treats her. In order to earn make to run away with Susana, Octavio joins the dog fighting business.
The second story follows Daniel and Valeria, a magazine publisher and Spanish supermodel. Valeria’s dog escapes and becomes trapped beneath the floorboards in the couple’s apartment for several days. The missing dog leads the Daniel and Valeria to several ugly fights and arguments.
The final section of the movie features El Chivo and Maru, the former who has been released from prison after 20 years for his involvement in guerilla movements. Living on the streets and taking care of a pack of mongrel dogs, the former private school teacher is now a professional hit man. In the movie, El Chivo attempts several times to locate his daughter, Maru.
Amores Perros se considera la película mexicana más famosa de los últimos tiempos. Fue exhibida por primera vez en el año 2000 y es la primera de las obras de la trilogía acerca de la muerte del director mexicano Alejandro González Iñárritu.
La película se divide en tres historias separadas cuyos personajes se vinculan debido a un accidente automovilístico en la ciudad de México. Los perros juegan un papel importante en cada una de las historias y representan el tema central: la lealtad. A través de sus vidas oscuras y a veces horribles, a menudo los protagonistas expresan propias lealtades, deslealtades y la crueldad entre sí y hacia los animales.
Comienza con historia de Octavio y Susana, cuñados. Octavio está perdidamente enamorado de Susana, esposa de su hermano, y está enojado por la forma en que él la trata. Con el fin de obtener dinero para escapar con Susana, Octavio se mete al negocio de las peleas de perros.
La segunda es la historia de Daniel y Valeria, un editor de revista y una supermodelo española. El perro de Valeria se escapa y queda atrapado durante varios días bajo el entarimado del piso del apartamento de la pareja. Esto lleva a Daniel y Valeria a pelear como perro y gato.
La sección final de la película presenta a El Chivo y a Maru, el primero salió de la cárcel luego de 20 años de estar preso por su participación en los movimientos guerrilleros, es ex profesor de escuela privada y vive en las calles cuidando de una manada de perros callejeros es sicario profesional. En la película, El Chivo intenta varias veces localizar a su hija, Maru.
