Several biopics have been produced in Latin America about the life of Ernesto Guevara AKA Che Guevara, a Marxist revolutionary. One of the most popular examples is The Motorcycle Diaries (Diarios de motocicleta), a film based directly off Granado’s memoir of the same title.
Adapted for the screen by José Rivera and directed by Walter Salles, the film’s adventure begins as a motorcycle trip Che (portrayed by Gael García Bernal) takes with his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna) across South America. As they travel, the duo sees a dark side of Latin America filled with class warfare, poverty and all around injustice, which ultimately shapes Che’s political stance.
The Motorcycle Diaries received mostly positive reviews. Many critics felt that the film wasn’t as entertaining as it could have been, but still praised it for its portrayal of the characters and the way it brings up the history of Latin America.
It’s notable that The Motorcycle Diaries, for an Argentine film, had a very high profile release all around the world. The film was distributed by Focus Features, a group owned by NBC that is known for releasing independent and low budget films such as Coraline, A Serious Man, and The Kids Are All Right.
The Motorcycle Diaries premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 and soon was released in the United Kingdom, France, Chile, Germany, and of course Argentina. Like many films supported by Focus Features, The Motorcycle Diaries received recognition at the Academy Awards, taking home achievements for Best Original Song.
Other awards included the BAFTA for Best Film Not In English, the Independent Spirit Award, and the Argentine Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor. .

Es notable que Diarios de Motocicleta, siendo una película argentina, tuviera un lanzamiento de tan alto perfil alrededor del mundo.
