Cinema Latino – Frida

Frida is a biographical movie that charts the life of the iconic Frida Kahlo, one of the most famous surrealist Mexican painters. The film was created by a team from Mexico, Canada and the United States, and includes an international cast. Kahlo is played by Mexican actress Salma Hayek who won an Academy Award for the role. The story is based around details found in the book Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo, written by Hayden Herrera. Each scene in the movie begins as a painting that melts away into a live action scene. The story begins when Kahlo is 18 years old where she is pictured walking through the streets of Mexico City. A bus in which Kahlo is riding is struck by a car trolley and she is impaled by a metal pole, resulting in the terrible injury that affects her for the rest of her life. Bedridden, Frida is presented with a blank canvas by her father and thus begins her artist career.

The movie details Kahlo’s life as she meets her future soul mate, her husband, the muralist Diego Rivera, who encourages her to continue painting. The two are presented having a variety of love affairs – bisexual Kahlo with both men and women. The movie depicts the dysfunctional relationship of the famous couple interspersed with scenes from portraying their professional lives and involvement in the communist movement.

SPANISH LESSON
“…cuando conoce a su futura media naranja” “… when she meets her future soul mate.” In English the meaning of ‘media naranja’ is ‘soul mate’, but the literal translation is ‘half an orange’. According to the myth mentioned by the Greek philosopher Plato, at the beginning of times the man was only one, living in perfect harmony. But one day he disobeyed the gods and they punished him by separating him into two halves (like an orange cut in half) being half man and half woman, thus condemning all human beings to wander forever in search of the other half to recover their happiness, their part needed to be a whole.

Examples:
– “¿En dónde conociste a tu media naranja?” – (“Where did you meet your soul mate?”) – “Conocí a mi esposa en París”. (“I met my wife in Paris.”) – “Y yo sigo buscando a mi media naranja”. (“And I’m still looking for my better half”.)
