SPANISH LESSON
“…cuando conoce a su futura media naranja” “… when she meets her future soul mate.” In English the meaning of ‘media naranja’ is ‘soul mate’, but the literal translation is ‘half an orange’. According to the myth mentioned by the Greek philosopher Plato, at the beginning of times the man was only one, living in perfect harmony. But one day he disobeyed the gods and they punished him by separating him into two halves (like an orange cut in half) being half man and half woman, thus condemning all human beings to wander forever in search of the other half to recover their happiness, their part needed to be a whole.
Examples:
– “¿En dónde conociste a tu media naranja?” – (“Where did you meet your soul mate?”) – “Conocí a mi esposa en París”. (“I met my wife in Paris.”) – “Y yo sigo buscando a mi media naranja”. (“And I’m still looking for my better half”.)
