While The Secret In Their Eyes was the second Argentine film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, The Official Story (La historia oficial, or The Official Version as release in the United Kingdom), was not only the first Argentine film to win the award, but the first Latin American film ever to have that honor. The film was directed by Luis Puenzo and written by him along with Aída Bortnik.
The story takes place during Argentina’s Dirty War in the mid 1970s, and tells the tale of a couple that is torn apart by the political strife. During the Dirty War, many children of parents who were persecuted were given up for adoption without telling the adopting family anything about the circumstances of the birth parent’s demise.
However Alicia, the adoptive mother of a child named Gaby, starts to wonder where her child came from, turning a deaf ear to her husband’s reminders that they are not supposed to talk about it. Alicia is played by Norma Aleandro, and other cast members include Héctor Alterio, Chunchuna Villafañe, Hugo Arana, and Analía Castro.
The film not only received recognition at the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but also won a Golden Globe in the same category. Other allocations included the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Norma Aleandro also received several awards for her acting, including the David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Actress and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress.
Si bien El Secreto de Sus Ojos fue la segunda película argentina que ganó el Premio de la Academia por Mejor Película de Lengua Extranjera, La Historia Oficial no solamente fue la primera película argentina en ganar el premio sino que también fue la primera película latinoamericana en obtener ese honor. El film fue dirigido por Luis Puenzo y escrito por él mismo junto con Aida Bortnik.
La historia ocurre durante la Guerra Sucia de Argentina a mediados de los años 70 y narra la historia de una pareja que resulta separada por la lucha política. Durante la Guerra Sucia, muchos hijos de padres que eran perseguidos eran dados en adopción sin decirle nada a la familia adoptiva sobre las circunstancias del fallecimiento de los padres biológicos.
Sin embargo, Alicia – la madre adoptiva de una niña llamada Gaby – empieza a preguntarse de dónde provenía su hija, haciendo oídos sordos a los recordatorios de su esposo de no que no se podía hablar de ese tema. Norma Aleandre interpreta a Alicia; otros miembros del elenco incluyen Héctor Alterio, Chunchuna Villafañe, Hugo Arana y Analía Castro.
La película no solamente recibió reconocimiento en los Premios de la Academia por ser la Mejor Película de Lengua Extranjera, sino también ganó un Golden Globe en la misma categoría. “…haciendo oídos sordos a los recordatorios de su esposo…” ‘Hacer oídos sordos’ means not listening (as if not hear anything, as if we were deaf to truth). It is equivalent to ‘turning a deaf ear.’
