Many filmmakers have told stories of the emotional trials a mother and father face when their newborn baby doesn’t survive. Largo Viage (A Long Journey), released by Terra Entertainment, expands on this theme in an interesting and unique way, telling the story from the point of view of the deceased newborn’s older brother. Still very young himself, he doesn’t entirely understand his family’s spiritual background. When his little brother is given paper wings to symbolize unity with the angels in heaven, the boy mistakes the wings for a literal ticket into the afterlife. And when a rather dramatic funeral leads to the wings being left behind, the boy goes on an adventure because he insists on returning the wings to his dead brother.
This classic film dates back to 1967 and is considered a classic of Chilean cinema. The film also delves into the spiritual believes of rural Chile with heavy religious overtones and symbolism. Films like this, with raw culture, can be one of the most natural ways to look into another country’s culture. After all, that’s part of what makes cinema from other countries so exciting, and Largo Viaje holds no punches in this regard.
(…he insists on returning the wings to his dead brother.) As you surely have figured out, the expression ‘empeñarse’ has the meaning of ‘‘to insist on’, ‘engage’ ‘persist in’ ‘strive to do.’
Let’s see another example: “Me he empeñado en aprender español” = “I’m determined to learn Spanish.”
