Machuca is another film by the prolific Chilean director Andres Wood, this one being made in dedication to the director of the private school he went to as a child, Father Gerardo Whelan (Saint George’ College.)
The film’s subject fits the theme of the dedication, telling the story of two friends at an expensive private school. Gonzalo Infante (Matías Quer) is a rich young man going to one of the most prestigious schools in the country in the mid 1970s.
In an effort to make the school more integrated, 5 students from low income families are equipped with full scholarship to attend the institution. Through the eyes and experiences of his classmate Padro Machuca (Ariel Mateluna), Gonzalo soon sees across Chile’s heavily segregated social classes to another way of life that his new friend goes through every day.
During this school story, Gonzalo’s family is also dealing with political matters, including a socialist movement that, of course, is unpopular with the higher class and dangerous times for the country’s leadership. Meanwhile, Machuca’s family is seeing another, more dastardly side of the country’s current government, and Gonzalo himself is eventually pulled into the matter as well.
No matter where you stand on the political or social spectrum, Machuca is a film for thought that spans beyond the time period it is set in, asking questions about politics and culture. While the film was not a strong commercial success, it was well received by critics and won Most Popular International Film at the 2004 Vancouver International Film Festival.
Machuca es otra película dirigida por el prolífico director chileno Andrés Wood. Fue dedicada al director de la escuela privada a la que el asistió de niño, el Padre Gerardo Whelan (Saint George’ College.)
La trama de la película encaja en el tema de la dedicatoria; narra la historia de dos amigos en una costosa escuela privada. Gonzalo Infante (Matías Quer) es un joven millonario que asiste a una de las más prestigiosas escuelas del país a mediados de los años 1970.
En un esfuerzo por hacer que la escuela fuera más integrada, les dan becas a 5 estudiantes de familias de pocos ingresos, para que asistan a la institución. Viéndolo a través de los ojos y experiencias de su compañero, Pedro Machuca (Ariel Mateluna), Gonzalo pronto descubre la fuerte segregación de clases sociales que se da en Chile, la cual su nuevo amigo tiene que enfrentar todos los días.
Mientras sucede esta historia escolar, la familia de Gonzalo también enfrenta problemas políticos, incluyendo un movimiento socialista que, por supuesto, no es popular dentro de las clases altas, así como tiempos peligrosos para el liderazgo del país. Mientras tanto, la familia de Machuca ve un lado más ruin del presente gobierno del país y el mismo Gonzalo resulta involucrado en el problema.
Sin importar su posición política en el espectro social o político, Machuca es una película que se expande más allá del periodo del tiempo en que transcurre, y nos cuestiona sobre política y cultura. Aunque la película no fue un gran éxito comercial, sí fue bien recibida por los críticos y ganó como la Película Internacional Mas Popular en el Vancouver International Film Festival en el 2004.
