Maria Full of Grace (in Spanish, María Llena Eres de Gracia) is the debut film from Joshua Marston. The script is almost entirely in Spanish although the film was a joint Colombian-U.S. production. In addition, while the story is based around the life of a girl from rural Colombia, the movie was mainly filmed in Ecuador and the United States.
María, the main character of the film, is working in a flower plantation with the job of stripping thorns from roses. After having a brush with her boss, she decides to leave her job despite the fact she is the sole support for her mother, sister and baby nephew. At the same time as quitting her job, the 17-year-old discovers she is pregnant with the child of a man she does not love. She decides to try her luck finding work in the city of Bogotá.
The title of the movie has a multiple meanings: firstly, the name María is in reference to the virgin Mary; secondly, “grace” is a slang term for heroine; and finally, “grace” could be the name of the unborn child. The reference to drugs in the title is an indication of the young girl’s ominous fate as she seeks the assistance in obtaining work with a young man she meets in her village.
María, el personaje principal de la película, trabaja en una plantación de flores quitando las espinas de las rosas. Después de tener un encontronazo con su jefe, decide dejar su trabajo a pesar de que ella es el único sostén de su madre, su hermana y su sobrino bebé. Al mismo tiempo que renuncia a su trabajo, la chica de 17 años descubre que está embarazada de un hombre al que no ama. Entonces decide probar suerte buscando trabajo en la ciudad de Bogotá.
El título de la película tiene múltiples significados: en primer lugar, el nombre de María hace referencia a la Virgen María, en segundo lugar, “gracia” en argot significa heroína y, por último, “gracia” podría ser el nombre de la bebé que está por nacer. La referencia a las drogas en el título es una indicación ominosa del destino de la joven, quien busca ayuda para obtener trabajo de un joven que conoce en el pueblo.

“Después de tener un encontronazo con su jefe…”. “After having a brush with her boss.”
‘Tener un encontronazo’ is a coloquial way of saying ‘having a clash, feud, confrontation with somebody or something,’ although the literal translation would be ‘having a big collision – clash – encounter – crash.’
Example: “Tuve un encontronazo muy desagradable con tu hermano, no quiero verlo”. “I had a very unpleasant brush with your brother; I don’t want to see him.”
