Although the parts come together as a complete set, The Battle of Chile may be best described as several separate films in one. Released between 1975 and 1979, with a late entry in 1996, the four films emphasize a violent political episode of 1973. During this time, a revolution commenced against the democratically elected Marxist Salvador Allende. Despite winning the election fairly, Allende did not have the majority of Chile on his side, with about a third of the country supporting him. Those voting for other candidates had been too scattered to stop him from taking office. The films take a strong stance in support of the people, chronicling all the way from Allende’s election to the violent revolution known as “The Coup d’état”.
The original trilogy received Grand Prize at the Grenoble International Film Festival, and in 1996, director Patricio Guzman released a follow up documentary called Chile, Obstinate Memory. Unlike the trilogy of films focussed on the political events, Obstinate Memory is a more personal film about the director himself. It reveals behind the scenes information about The Battle For Chile, and chronicles Guzman showing the trilogy to those who have never seen it before.
The films received overall praise from a variety of critics and celebrities for its strong message and quality filmmaking. Tim Allen called it “The major political film of our times”, and many called out for the film to be seen more widely outside of Chile, lest countries like the United States wind up in a similar situation.

En esa época se levantó una revolución en contra del presidente marxista democráticamente electo, Salvador Allende. Aunque había ganado las elecciones de manera justa, Allende no tenía el apoyo de la mayoría de chilenos; solo lo apoyaba una tercera parte del país. Quienes votaron por otros candidatos estaban demasiado repartidos como para evitar que él tomara el cargo. Las películas adoptan una postura firme en apoyo del pueblo, al hacer toda la crónica – desde la elección de Allende hasta la violenta revolución conocida como “El Golpe de Estado”.
La trilogía original recibió el Gran Premio del Grenoble International Film Festival: En 1996 el director Patricio Guzmán estrenó una documental como secuela, llamada Chile, La Memoria Obstinada. A diferencia de otras trilogías enfocadas en eventos políticos, La Memoria Obstinada es una película más personal que trata sobre el director mismo. Revela información tras bambalinas de La Batalla de Chile, y muestra a Guzmán presentando la trilogía a aquellos que nunca la han visto.
La película recibió el elogio general de varios críticos y celebridades por su fuerte mensaje y por la calidad de la filmación. Tim Allen la llamó “la mejor película política de nuestros tiempos” y muchos pidieron que la película se viera fuera de Chile, para que países como Estados Unidos no caigan en una situación similar.

“…las cuatro películas hacen hincapié en un violento episodio político de 1973” ‘Hacer hincapié’ has the meaning of ’emphasize’, ‘highlight’, ‘stress’, ‘underline’. The Spanish term ‘hincapié’ is formed by two words: the verb ‘hincar’ = ‘to support one thing on another as for nailing’) and the word ‘pie’ = ‘foot.’ The meaning is to sink the foot for support or in exerting strength.
