Set in modern day Peru, The Milk of Sorrow (in Spanish La Teta Asustada, which translates to The Frightened Teat) is an award winning film from Peruvian director Claudia Llosa. Mainly filmed in the poverty stricken district of Manchay, the movie explores the life of indigenous people who begun to occupy the area in the 1980s to escape the terrorism that plagued Peru from 1980 to 1992.
The film uses highly symbolic cinematography to chart the life of Fausta, a girl who is suffering from disease passed down from her mother through her breast milk. The disease, known as “la teta asustada” only affects women who were raped or abused while pregnant.
Fausta is a living memory of the horrors that once afflicted Peru that lead the girl to seek a life very different from her mother.
The movie begins with Fausta’s mother singing in an indigenous language as she lies on her deathbed. After her mother’s death, Fausta must earn enough in order to bury her mother, scenes of which are interspersed with suffering for disease and fears of abuse.
A stark contrast is demonstrated between the lifestyles of poor indigenous families and wealthy homeowners for whom Fausta
La Teta Asustada es una película galardonada de la peruana Claudia Llosa. Fue filmada principalmente en el distrito pobre de Manchay y explora la vida de los indígenas que comenzaron a ocupar la zona en la década de 1980 para escapar del terrorismo que destrozaba a Perú entre 1980 y 1992.
La película utiliza una cinematografía altamente simbólica para narrar la vida de Fausta, una joven que sufre de una enfermedad transmitida por la madre a través de la leche materna. La enfermedad, conocida como “la teta asustada”, sólo afecta a las mujeres que fueron violadas o abusadas durante el embarazo.
Fausta es la memoria viviente de los horrores que en cierta época afectaron a Perú, los cuales hicieron que la chica buscara una vida muy diferente de la de la autora de sus días.
La película comienza cuando la madre de Fausta canta en lengua indígena cuando está en su lecho de muerte. Después de que muere su madre, Fausta debe ganar lo suficiente para poder enterrarla y en esas escenas se intercalan retrospectivas del sufrimiento debido a la enfermedad y el miedo al abuso.
Existe un fuerte contraste entre el estilo de vida de las familias indígenas pobres y los ricos propietarios de viviendas para los que trabaja Fausta.
