Nine Queens (Nueve Reinas), written and directed by Fabián Bielinsky, quickly became a favorite both in Argentina and with Latin American film fans around the world after its release in 2000. Starring superstar Argentine actor Ricardo Darín along with Gastón Pauls, Leticia Brédice, and Tomás Fonzi, Nine Queens tells a crime drama about two con artists. Brought together by fate, the con artists decide to work together to pull of a lucrative scam, but their adventure moves in the wrong direction and is filled with a variety of shocking twists and turns.
The film has won countless of awards around the world since its release, including over a dozen allocates at the 2001 Argentine Film Critics Association Awards, the Audience Award at Portland International Film Festival, and first prize at the Lima Latin American Film Festival. Nine Queens has even received great praise in mainstream American cinema, from top critics such as Roger Ebert (who said the screenplay had “elegant and sly deadpan comedy”) and Edward Guthmann (who called the film “Fast-paced and unerringly surprising”). The film received a limited release in the United States in 2002 as well.
This film is not only considered one of the best Argentina has to offer, but it is also very easy to find outside of Argentina, allowing those new to Latin American cinema to get their feet wet with Nine Queens. Nueve Reinas, escrita y dirigida por Fabián Bielinsky, luego de su lanzamiento en el año 2000 se convirtió rápidamente en una de las favoritas de los aficionados, tanto del cine de Argentina como del cine latinoamericano en todo el mundo. Nueve Reinas es un drama de crimen que trata sobre dos estafadores y es protagonizado por la súper estrella argentina Ricardo Darín acompañado de Gastón Pauls, Leticia Brédice y Tomás Fonzi. Unidos por el destino, los estafadores deciden asociarse para llevar a cabo un fraude muy lucrativo, pero su aventura pierde el norte y se llena de vueltas y giros espeluznantes.
Desde su lanzamiento, la película ha ganado un incontable número de premios en todo el mundo, incluyendo más de doce entregados por la Asociación de Cronistas Cinematográficos de la Argentina en el año 2001 y el primer lugar en el Lima Latin American Film Festival (Festival Cinematográfico Latinoamericano de Lima).
