Unfortunately, Mótel dies before the end of Mauro’s first day in his care, and the child finds himself thrown into the care of a close knit Jewish community. Mauro must spend his parent’s “vacation” to the mercy of God, surrounded by strangers, not understanding a word of Yiddish, and holding out on a promise of his parent’s return that they may not be able to keep.
The Year My Parents Went on Vacation received mainly positive reviews, with many critics enjoying the film’s ability to remain warm, light, and delicate while tackling such a dark plot. Hamburger, who also directed the film, had a similar experience as the protagonist with his parents being briefly arrested, and critics also showed their appreciation for the realism this experience added to the final product.
The Year My Parents Went on Vacation received over 20 awards including the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize for Best Picture and the Young Artist Award for Best International Film.
El guión de El Año Que Mis Padres se fueron de Vacaciones (O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias) fue escrita hace más de cuatro años por el quinteto formado por Cao Hamburger, Adriana Falcão, Claudio Galperin, Bráulio Mantovani y Anna Muylaert; narra la historia de un niño de 12 años llamado Mauro, cuyos padres escapan del gobierno militar de Brasil de los años 70. Para salvar a su hijo, la joven pareja lo deja a cargo de su abuelo, un barbero llamado Mótel.
Desafortunadamente, Mótel muere antes de que finalice el primer día en que Mauro está a su cuidado y el niño resulta entregado al cuidado de una comunidad muy unida de judíos. Mauro debe pasar las “vacaciones” de sus padres a la buena de Dios, rodeado por extraños, sin entender ni una palabra de Yiddish y aferrándose a la promesa del retorno de sus padres, que tal vez no podrán cumplir.
El Año Que Mis Padres Salieron de Vacaciones recibió opiniones positivas en su mayoría, y muchos de los críticos disfrutaron de la habilidad de la película para ser cálida, liviana y delicada dentro un ambiente tan oscuro. Hamburger, quien también dirigió la película, tuvo una experiencia similar a la del protagonista: sus padres fueron brevemente arrestados y los críticos también demostraron su aprecio hacia el realismo que esta experiencia le añadió al producto final.
