Official Trailer – Plumiferos (Free Birds)
Plumíferos (Free Birds) is an 2010 animated film by Manos Digitales Animation Studio about the secret lives of city birds. Following a Prince and the Pauper sort of premise, Juan is a sparrow that wishes to be more unique while Feifi is a canary that wants to live the life of a wild bird rather than a pampered pet. Together the two very different birds, along with other flying companions, go on adventures to learn what freedom really means. Voice talents include Luisana Lopilato, Mariano Martínez, and Carla Peterson.
What makes Plumíferos impressive isn’t anything particularly interesting about the premise or style of the artwork, but that the entire film was created in open source software on Linux machines. In other words, every piece of software used on the film can be downloaded for free by almost anyone. Blender, in particular, in an open source program that works on all operating systems and is popular with many 3D artists all around the world.
In a time when many people assume that the quality of animation is all about the technology, Plumíferos presents what can be created on the tightest possible technology budget and hard work. As Latin American cinema originally took off because Hollywood was too expensive to work with, the production of Plumíferos echoes the roots of its industry.
Plumíferos es una película animada del año 2010, producida por el Estudio de Animación Manos Digitales; trata sobre la vida secreta de las aves de ciudad. La filmación sigue en cierta forma el argumento de El Príncipe y el Mendigo: Juan es un gorrión que desea ser único y Feifi es un canario que quiere vivir la vida de un ave silvestre, en vez de ser una mascota mimada. Las dos aves, siendo tan diferentes, van juntas y con otros compañeros de vuelo en busca de aventuras, para aprender el verdadero significado de la libertad. Entre los talentos vocales se incluyen Luisana Lopilato, Mariano Martínez y Carla Peterson.
Lo que hace de Plumíferos una película particularmente interesante no es el argumento ni el estilo artístico sino el hecho que todo el film fue producido en un software de código abierto en maquinas Linux. En otras palabras, cada pieza de software que se utiliza en la película puede ser descargada de forma gratuita por cualquier persona. Blender, en particular, es un programa de código abierto que funciona en todos los sistemas operativos y es popular entre numerosos artistas de 3D de todo el mundo.
En esta época en la que muchas personas asumen que la calidad de la animación depende solo de la tecnología, Plumíferos presenta algo que se puede crear con el presupuesto más ajustado posible para la tecnología y con un trabajo duro. Si bien el cine latinoamericano se creó originalmente debido al alto costo de las filmaciones de Hollywood, la producción de Plumíferos revive las raíces de la industria.

“…deciden ahuecar el ala e irse…” This expression in Spanish means “leave, go somewhere” it comes from an analogy with the birds: they stretch and shake their wings before taking flight. It is used to indicate we’re about to leave. This is another example: ‘Los ladrones ahuecaron el ala y huyeron antes de que llegara la policía’. (‘The thieves left before the pólice arrived.’)
