Violeta (Violeta se fue a los cielos, also known as Violeta Went To Heaven) is a biopic directed by Andrés Wood about musical artist Violeta Parra. Parra is widely considered responsible for the revival and outreach of Chilean folk music. Along with her musical career, she showed talent in folklore and visual artwork until her suicide in 1967.
Violeta is not a sequential film; scenes bounce back and forth to different periods in the singer’s life. One of the major compliments from critics is how the film manages to do this without making the viewer feel confused or jerked around. All the while, Perra (played by Francisca Gavilán) is shown struggling deep down, unable to find a place in the world where she truly feels she belongs, where she is considered important and worthy of attention.
The film has been praised not only for the heartfelt retelling of a musical icon’s life and death, but for the authenticity put into the culture of Chile through the 1960s. Variety raved that “Production values are topnotch” while Hollywood Reporter praised Gavilán’s performance, saying that she “inhabits the songwriter’s role so passionately that there’s little nuance to her performance, it’s so full of emotionality and drama.”
Violeta was put forward for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award in 2012, but didn’t make the shortlist of nominations. However, it went on to be awarded the World Cinema Jury Prize for drama at the Sundance Film Festival that same year.
Violeta (Violeta se fue a los Cielos) es una película biográfica dirigido por Andrés Wood sobre una artista musical, Violeta Parra. Parra es ampliamente considerada como la responsable del resurgimiento y la ampliación de las fronteras de la música folklórica chilena. A lo largo de su carrera, hasta su suicidio en 1967, dio pruebas de tener un gran talento en el folklore y en el arte visual.
Violeta no es una película secuencial ya que las escenas se remontan a diferentes periodos de la vida de la cantante. Uno de los mayores halagos de los críticos es acerca de la forma en la que la película logra hacer esto sin confundir ni sobresaltar al espectador. Perra (interpretada por Francisca Gavilán) durante toda la película lucha internamente por encontrar en el mundo un lugar al que realmente pueda sentir que pertenece, donde sea tomada en cuenta, pero es en vano.
La película ha sido aclamada, no solo por la interpretación de la vida y la muerte de un icono musical, sino que también por la autenticidad de la cultura chilena de los años 1960 que presenta. Variety comentó: “Los valores de la producción son de primera”, y Hollywood Reporter elogió la actuación de Gavilán, diciendo que ella “le da vida a su papel de cantautora con tanta pasión que su actuación está llena de emoción y drama”.
Violeta fue candidata para el Premio de la Academia por Mejor Película Extranjera en 2012 pero no llego a la lista de nominaciones. Sin embargo, fue premiada en el World Cinema Jury Prize por drama en el Sundance Film Festival de ese mismo año.
