The year is 1988 and the residents of Melo, a small town in Uruguay on the Brazilian border, are hoping to turn a visit from Pope John Paul II into a money making opportunity.
Despite concerns that these practices would go against their religion, the locals cannot help being excited as the media reports that hundreds, and later that thousands, of Brazilians are expected to turn up for the visit.One man, Beto, wants to change his luck from petty smuggling to a life of riches and decides to go further than simply baking cakes and selling chorizo like everybody else.
Realizing that others are relying on food to make money, Beto decides what they really need is a great number of toilets. Although there are already plenty in the country, his will be the only one designed for the Pope, which gives the movie with its title The Pope’s Toilet (in Spanish, El Baño del Papa).
Beto is sure that the locals will want to use his toilet, too, and that it will be a great success; however, first he must find the perfect toilet, and this involves numerous trips across the border to Brazil.
His journeys cause Beto more problems than he originally envisaged such as a lack of money for his investment and disputes with a customs enforcement officer; however, nothing will deter him from completing his mission.
El año es 1988 y los residentes de Melo, una pequeña ciudad en Uruguay en la frontera con Brasil, esperan la visita del Papa Juan Pablo II, con la esperanza de aprovechar la oportunidad para obtener dinero.
A pesar de que estas prácticas están en contra de su religión, los lugareños no dejan de entusiasmarse conforme los medios reportan que se espera que cientos, y luego miles, de brasileños lleguen para la visita del Papa. Un hombre, Beto, quiere cambiar su suerte y de ser un pequeño contrabandista desea pasar a vivir la vida de un millonario, por lo que decide no contententarse con hacer pasteles y vender chorizos como todo hijo de vecino.
Al darse cuenta de que los demás sólo piensan en ganar dinero con la comida, Beto decide que lo que realmente se necesita es un gran número de baños. Aunque ya hay muchos en el lugar, el suyo será el único diseñado para el Papa, de donde proviene el título de la película, “El Baño del Papa”.
Beto está seguro de que la gente del lugar también querrá usar su baño y que este será un gran éxito; sin embargo, primero tiene que encontrar el baño perfecto y esto involucra numerosos viajes a través de la frontera con Brasil.
Sus viajes le causan a Beto más problemas de los que había calculado, tales como la falta de dinero para su inversión y una disputa con un agente de aduanas; sin embargo, nada detendrá a Beto en su afán de completar su misión.

“…decide no contententarse con hacer pasteles y vender chorizos como todo hijo de vecino”. In English we say that Beto doesn’t want to act like everybody else, in Spanish the meaning is he doesn’t want to act like ‘every neighbor’s child’. In both cases, we understand that Beto doesn’t like to do what everybody else is doing. The best translation into English would be ‘like Tom, Dick & Harry.’
Ejemplo: “No voy a permitir que cualquier hijo de vecino me diga qué tengo qué hacer”. “I will not let anybody else tell me what to do.”
