Cinema Latino: Hermano (Venezuela)

Venezuela’s award winning picture “Hermano” premiered at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2010 where it won Golden George 2010 Best Film and the People’s Choice Award.

It is a story of innocence and ambition in one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Caracas, where two boys are presented with the same opportunities but choose very different paths.

The film opens with Julio as a young boy and his mother walking through a gateway near a prison. On hearing what he believes to be a cat, Julio turns and runs back to see to the horror of his mother.

The two find an abandoned baby lying in a dump and, after a moment’s hesitation where it appears Julio’s mother will just walk away, they pick up the baby and take him with them. The title appears with the word “Hermano,” meaning brother.

The next scenes are far in the future when the two boys are adolescents. They are playing in a football team, La Ceniza (The Ashes), in an important game that will decide whether they pass to the final. It soon becomes apparent that the boys are the best players in their neighborhood.

Daniel, known as Gato (Cat) after how he was found, has dreams of playing for Caracas FC, one of the most important teams in the country. Since perseverence, gets it: his chance becomes a reality when the coach tells the boys they will be able to try out for the youth team.

Julio, obviously, is not as innocent as his younger brother and, while he also has the chance to become a professional player, he gradually becomes more highly involved in the dangerous drug dealing business.

(“Perseverence, gets it: his chance becomes a reality when the coach tells the boys they will be able to try out for the youth team.”)

‘El que la sigue, la consigue’ is a Spanish adage that means there are many things in life that are difficult to obtain: the love of our life, a wonderful family, that trip we have dreamed on, tickets to go to that very special football match… but if we put all our efforts, the means and our will in it, and we have a little luck, we’ll get what we set out to get

It is known that the things that are difficult to obtain, are worth more when we get them, because having cost us as much effort to reach them, the more we appreciate having them.

(“Perseverance gets it, look at Ricardo,he  was so poor that his parents could not pay for his school and now he is already a doctor.”)
