Cinema Latino: La Hora Cero (Venezuela)

The Zero Hour (La Hora Cero in Spanish) presents the harsh reality of violent life in Caracas.

The story is told through a Venezuelan hitman, Tito, who introduces himself in a voice over as La Parca (the Reaper) because, he explains, death always follows wherever he goes.

Parca is carrying his girlfriend, Ladydi, who is heavily pregnant and on the point of giving birth. Both her and Tito have been shot, but only she is in need of urgent medical attention.

At the same time, it becomes apparent that there is currently a nationwide doctor strike meaning medical services are extremely limited. This has happened during a cholera epidemic that is currently spreading across the country and so thousands of people are likely to die.

Parca, along with two other men, race through the streets carrying Ladydi on a moped and force entry into a family practitioner center.

After demanding the help of a doctor named Cova, they discover the medical center does not have the adequate surgical equipment and so, stealing a car and kidnapping Cova, the group begin another chase to a private hospital.

The movie demonstrates the stark contrast between the poor areas of the city and the wealthier families receiving treatment in the second hospital.

Parca realizes the unfairness of the situation and It freaks him out to see the injustice of the situation because it is not only his girlfriend who is desperate for medical care.

The film won Best Film Audience Award at the 2011 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival and Best Film at the 2011 Providence Latin American Film Festival.

‘Quicio’ is the pivot, the fulcrum about which moves and rotates the door or window and when these are removed, the door falls out of the hinge.

Therefore we can conclude that any element that takes us out of our position or natural state (as the door from it’s pivot), produces a feeling of dislocation with the consequent feelings of anger and irritation. Hence, ‘sacar de quicio’ means ‘to drive someone crazy; drive someone up a wall’

“It blows me away to come home and see that you didn´t what you had to do.”
