This dark, gothic love story is set at an hacienda in the jungle by the sea.
Maria lives in France with her husband but returns to her homeland after receiving news that she has inherited the property from her recently passed aunt, Oriana, for whom the movie is named.
Arriving at the ranch, Maria finds it very rundown and dirty, and she immediately expresses her wish to sell the home. Much of the hacienda has remained unchanged over the many years since Maria last visited.
As she wanders through the many rooms of the mansion, she discovers objects that lead to flashbacks from the time she spent one summer as a young adolescent.
A more complex story begins to unfold such as the reason why Maria’s aunt never left the hacienda and the cause of bad tempered Fidelia’s wishes that some things are left unspoken.
While exploring the house, Maria discovers one final secret that changes her life.
Among other awards, Oriana won the Camera d’Or prize for best first feature in 1985 at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was directed, co-produced and co-written by Venezuelan director Fina Torres.
Esta historia de amor gótica y oscura transcurre en una hacienda en la selva, cerca del mar.
María vive en Francia con su marido, pero regresa a su patria después de recibir la noticia de que ha heredado la propiedad de su tía Oriana – cuyo nombre lleva la película – quien falleció recientemente.
Al llegar al rancho, María lo encuentra muy deteriorado y sucio, y de inmediato expresa su deseo de vender la casa. Gran parte de la hacienda se ha mantenido sin cambios durante los muchos años que han pasado desde la última visita de María.
Mientras camina por las muchas habitaciones de la mansión, va descubriendo objetos que la trasladan al pasado: a un verano que pasó allí siendo adolescente.
Se empieza a desarrollar una historia más compleja que explica por qué la tía de María nunca se fue de la hacienda y la razón por la que Fidelia – quien siempre estaba de malas pulgas – deseaba que no se hablara de ciertas cosas.
Al explorar la casa, María descubre un secreto final que cambia su vida.
Entre otros premios, Oriana ganó el galardón Camera d’Or a la mejor primera película en 1985 en el Festival de Cine de Cannes. La película fue dirigida, co-producida y co-escrita por la directora venezolana Fina Torres.

“… Fidelia, quien siempre estaba de malas pulgas, deseaba que no se hablara de ciertas cosas.” The expression ‘tener malas pulgas’ (literally to have bad fleas) is used in Spanish to describe a person who is constantly in a bad mood, grumpy, resentful or that easily gets angered.
In English it is equivalent to have a bad temper. The origin of this expression is unclear, but it is easy to deduce that whoever has fleas is uncomfortable and not very happy about it, and as a fruit of popular imagination, soon became a common expression of the Spanish language.
Examples: “No quiero que montes ese caballo, últimamente ha estado de malas pulgas”. (“I don´t want you to ride that horse, lately he has had a very bad mood.”)
“Mi jefe amaneció hoy de malas pulgas, despidió a tres personas”. “My boss woke up today in a bad mood, he fired three people.”
