Teresa is not a typical Cuban woman; she is trying to break free of traditional values that say a woman’s place is in the home. She faces strong opposition from her mother, her mother-in-law and, most of all, her masochist husband. Although driven both by her career as a crew leader in a textile factory and cultural leader in her union, she cares deeply for her children and dedicates the little spare time she has to them and to housework.

Teresa’s husband, Ramón, consistently voices his opinion that men are different and do not play to the same rules as women. He expects Teresa to take full responsibility for the housekeeping, although she is far busier than he, and to move with him when he is offered a better position at work although it would mean sacrificing her own job
Teresa no es la típica mujer cubana, está tratando de liberarse de los valores tradicionales que dicen que el lugar de una mujer está en el hogar. Se enfrenta a una fuerte oposición de parte de su madre, su suegra y, sobre todo, de su marido masoquista. Aunque a ella la impulsa su carrera como jefe de equipo en una fábrica textil y como líder cultural de su sindicato, se preocupa profundamente por sus hijos y les dedica a ellos y a las tareas domésticas el poco tiempo libre que tiene.

“…para muchos hombres aceptar estos cambios es otro cantar.” (“for many men, accepting these changes is another story altogether.”). ‘Otro cantar’ literaly means ‘a different song.’
We use this expression when something is very different, when everything takes a different route, and it is applicable to almost any situation.
Example: ‘Mis padres querían que volviera a casa a las 10 de la noche, pero luego me dijeron que podía volver a las 12 y eso es otro cantar’. (‘My parents wanted me to come home at 10 pm, but then I was told I could come back at 12 and that’s a different story.’)
