Although accidents do happen- most are preventable and it is important that students take responsibility for their safety while abroad. Below are a list of standards and expectations for students to employ while studying abroad.
- Emergencies: any emergency situation should involve contacting the local equivalent of “911”, which has English-language help. Your school contact number is not for emergencies, as the staff is comprised of educators and service professionals, not trained emergency responders.
- In addition to the local emergency number you should also carry your embassy contact information as they are there to help you.
- Students are expected to purchase travel insurance and carry all valid information pertaining to their policy at all times.
- Students will be provided keys for homestays or apartments. It is a student’s responsibility to report any problems with locks and secure all doors. All apartments and homestays are regularly inspected by ECELA staff for safety, security and high quality standards.
- It is a student’s responsibility to abide by all in-country rules while traveling. This includes the consumption of drugs and alcohol.
- Drugs and alcohol are NOT permitted on any ECELA campus, affiliated apartment or homestay, excursion or activity. If a student is found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, ECELA directors have the right to expel a student without refund.
In general, all of the rules that apply at home are valid while traveling abroad. Although we at ECELA will do our best to keep students well-informed, students must also take responsible for their safety and security while abroad.
