Chile’s national anthem is actually the second the country has had, after the short lived original anthem of 1819 – 1828. Today’s National Anthem of Chile was composed by Ramón Carnicer in a fit of pride for the Spanish speaking world after being exiled from the country he has immigrated to, England, for his radical political beliefs.
Both versions share the same lyrics, but Carnicer’s tune caught on where the original tune hadn’t, and has been the National Anthem ever since, with a few alterations here and there.
The song is played for a variety of purposes such as military events, broadcast sign-offs and sign-ons, and rallies. While only the fifth verse is sung most of the time, the full anthem includes six verses and a chorus.

El actual Himno Nacional de Chile lo compuso Ramón Carnicer en un arranque de orgullo por el mundo de habla española, luego de haber sido exiliado de Inglaterra, el país a dónde había emigrado, por sus radicales ideas políticas.
Ambas versiones comparten la misma letra, pero la melodía de Carnicer captó lo que la original no había captado, y desde entonces ha sido el himno nacional, con algunas modificaciones aquí y allá.
El canto se entona en diversas ocasiones, tales como eventos militares, al iniciar o terminar una transmisión y en reuniones. Por lo general solo se canta la quinta estrofa, sin embargo el himno completo incluye seis estrofas y un coro.
