Cultural Tidbit: How to Blend in when in Buenos Aires

Here are a few fun tips for how to look and act more like a porteño (Buenos Aires resident) while learning Spanish in Argentina.

1. Show your affection. Porteños are quite demonstrative with their affections. This even extends to public make out sessions in the park, the club, or even in the metro.

2. Become a night owl. All the action in Buenos Aires takes place after dark. Dinner is sometimes as late as 11 pm, with more entertainment after that. Sleep in until noon, take a nap, dose yourself with espresso–whatever you have to do to stay awake all night long.

3. Don’t arrive anywhere on time. If you do, you can guarantee you’ll be the only one.

4. Wear platform shoes. If you’re a dude, consider yourself lucky, you can skip this one.

5. Get your sugar rush on. Porteños love sweets, and find something to smear with dulce de leche at every meal.
