If you are planning to attend a Spanish language program in Peru, it only makes sense to learn about the country’s cultural history. By doing so, you will be in a position where you can better appreciate the region’s political history as well as its various landmarks, museums and buildings. One of the key figures you may want to learn about in advance is Alberto Fujimori who was the President of Peru from 1990-2000. If you learn Spanish in Lima, you may very well hear Fujimori referred to at some point during your stay.
During the time Alberto Fujimori was President, about two-thirds of people in Peru stated they approved of this leader. However, on the other hand, Fujimori was prosecuted in 2008 for corruption and crimes against humanity due to human rights violations. As it turns out, in order to defeat the terrorists, human rights abuses had taken place.
In 2000, Fujimori attempted to flee the corruption scandal that was going on in Peru by hiding out in Japan. When he visited Chile in 2005, he was arrested and prosecuted in Peru. Fujimori recently was tried and found guilty. In 2007, he was sentenced to six years in prison due to an illegal search and seizure. In 2009, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. This charge was due to his part in murder and kidnapping by the Grupo Colina death squad in the 1990’s. Grupo Colina was made up of Peruvian Armed Forces members.
Interestingly, Fujimori still holds some support from Peruvians. A study at the University of Lima showed that he ranks fifth amongst political figures. According to statistics, he could potentially restart a political career.
Through learning about recent political history, you will feel much more well-informed and confident to discuss current events during your Spanish immersion program in Peru. It is a good idea to read some books and articles about Peru’s history and politics before you even arrive. This will enhance your cultural awareness and allow you to feel more confident during your trip.
