In Spanish, negatives are used in certain constructions where English uses indefinite words rather than negatives:
- after que (than) in comparatives:
– La lluvia fue peor que nada. The rain was worse than anything.
– Sí, y yo me mojé más que nadie. Yes, and I got wetter than anyone.– Hoy habló el profesor mejor que nunca. Today the teacher spoke better than ever.
– Y aprendimos más cosas que en ningún otro momento. And we learned more than at any other time. - after sin, antes de, and antes que:
– Lo hizo sin pedir nada a nadie nunca. He did it without ever asking anything of anyone.
– Antes de hacer nada, lee las instrucciones. Before doing anything, read the instructions.
– Has llegado antes que nadie. You’ve arrived before anyone else.
- after imposible, poco probable, inútil, expressions of doubt, and other similar words:
– Es imposible hacer nada aquí. It’s impossible to do anything here.
– Dudo que venga nadie. I doubt that anyone will come.
