As a student learning Spanish, I remember being really amused to learn that animal “speak” differently in different languages. This is mainly because the way that we hear and transcribe sounds is affected by the conditioning of our native tongue.
guau guau = woof
miau = meow
bee mee = baaa
ki-kiri-ki = cockadoodledoo
gluglu = gobble gobble
pio pio = chirp
berp = ribbit
mu = moo
As you can see, some animal sounds seem to be more universal than others! For example, the “oinc oinc” of a Spanish pig practically marks him as a pan-linguist 🙂
