Passive Constructions Part 1

Felicidades a la ganadora de la semana pasada, Amanda Niermann!

The passive voice in Spanish consists of a form of ser plus the past participle, often followed by the agent phrase introduced by the preposition por.

This passive voice is often used in Spanish when the speaker wishes to deemphasize the preformer of the action. In this construction, the speaker can focus on the direct object by making it the subject of the passive sentence.

  • (active voice) Los obreros construirán el rascacielos.
  • (passive voice) El rascacielos será construido por los obreros.

Note that the direct object of the active sentence, el rascacielos, becomes the subject of the passive sentence.

A FEW MORE EXAMPLES TO PRACTICE THIS CONCEPT:

Write the following sentences, changing them from active to passive voice. Keep the verb tense of the active voice sentence. The first is done for you.*

  1. La recepcionista encontró el número de teléfono. El número de teléfono fue encontrado por la recepcionista.
  2. Los empleados llenarán los formularios.
  3. El bibliotecario ha preparado el folleto.
  4. Los agentes de viajes tradujeron los documentos.
