Passive Constructions Part 2

“Se” Passive Constructions

Spanish uses the construction se plus the verb in the third person singular or plural to deemphasize the subject. The agent phrase (por + noun) is not used in this construction. Notice that in English, this “se” passive construction can be translated in various ways.

  • Se sale por aquí. You go out this way. / This is the way out.
  • Se vive bien en este país.      People live well in this country.
  • Se trabaja con entusiasmo.     We (You, They) work enthusiastically.

Note that reflexive verbs can only show an unidentified or deemphasized subject with the addition of uno or una to a third person singular verb.

  • Unos se divierte mucho en el tiovivo.     You have a lot of fun on the merry-go-round.
  • Uno se despierta más tarde los domingos.     People wake up later on Sundays.

PRACTICE YOUR SPANISH WITH MORE EXAMPLES!

Use the following nouns and verbs to make passive sentences using “se” with the verb in the future tense. The first is done for you.

  1. enchufar / la nevera   Se enchufará la nevera.
  2. encender / las lámparas
  3. guardar / las cajas
  4. meter / las sábanas / en el armario
