Spanish Lessons - Structure of Group Course

As opposed to the methods used in other institutions, the ECELA teaching method focuses on achieving progress in all areas and abilities within the Spanish language with an aim to complete proficiency.

The areas we develop in our students include the following: LISTENING COMPREHENSION: understanding what we hear. READING COMPREHENSION: understanding what we read. WRITING SKILLS: the ability to write in a way that can be understood my any native Latin American. ORAL SKILLS: the ability to make our spoken messages understood. PRACTICAL GRAMMAR USE: where grammar is seen as a means of serving communication and not as the end goal of the class.

In ECELA, group Spanish classes are divided between interactive grammar classes and classes in conversation and communication.

El método de las clases Ecela, a diferencia de otros métodos usados en otras instituciones, está enfocado a lograr avances en todas las áreas y habilidades de la lengua española para poder alcanzar un dominio global de la lengua.

Las áreas que desarrollamos en nuestros estudiantes son: COMPRENSIÓN AUDITIVA, es decir, entender el mensaje cuando escuchamos. COMPRENSIÓN LECTORA, es decir, entender lo que leemos. EXPRESIÓN ESCRITA, es decir, escribir mensajes que sean comprensibles por cualquier persona latina nativa. EXPRESIÓN ORAL, es decir, poder hablar y que las personas entiendan nuestros mensajes orales. USO PRÁCTICO DE LA GRAMÁTICA, es decir, ver la gramática como un medio que está al servicio de la comunicación y no como el objetivo final de la clase.

Las clases grupales de español de Ecela están divididas en clases de gramática interactiva y clases de conversación y comunicación.

The grammar portion of the group class builds a strong foundation for correct communication.

INTERACTIVE GRAMMAR: In this teaching method, students are the protagonists in their own learning. Following the teacher’s instructions while working in groups or pairs, students manage to observe, analyze, discover, understand and assimilate Spanish grammar in order to apply it in everyday practice. Students observe, discover and understand how the language works as opposed to listening to rules given by a teacher. In the end, many of them are able to grasp the rules for themselves. This methodology is based on the Communicative Approach and Guided Learning.

CONVERSATION AND COMMUNICATION: These classes are used to apply the learnings from earlier that day or from previous classes. The dynamics employed and activities carried out aim to develop students’ speaking skills as well as their oral comprehension. This is done via a wide range of teaching activities, debates, role- playing, simulations, exhibitions, audio materials, presentations, work in groups or pairs, movie excerpts, etc. In this way, students lose their fear of interacting with each other in the classroom thus allowing them to flourish in a Latin American environment.

GRAMÁTICA INTERACTIVA: en este método de enseñanza los propios estudiantes son los protagonistas de su aprendizaje, ellos trabajando en grupo o pares y siguiendo las instrucciones de sus profesores logran observar, analizar, descubrir, entender y asimilar la gramática española para al final del proceso aplicarla a un uso práctico (el uso real que tiene en la vida cotidiana). Los estudiantes observan, descubren y entienden como funciona la lengua en vez de recibir una regla entregada por su profesor. Finalmente muchos de ellos pueden construir las reglas por sí mismos. Esta metodología se basa en el Enfoque Comunicativo y Descubrimiento Guiado (Guided Learning)

CONVERSACIÓN Y COMUNICACIÓN: estas clases están destinadas a aplicar lo aprendido ya sea en la clase de la mañana, o en las clases anteriores, realizando actividades y dinámicas que apuntan al desarrollo de las habilidades orales de los estudiantes así como también al desarrollo de su comprensión auditiva. Existe una amplia gama de actividades, didácticas, debates, juegos de roles, simulaciones, exposiciones, audios, presentaciones, trabajo grupales o en parejas, fragmentos de películas, etc. De esa manera los estudiantes pierden el miedo a interactuar entre sí dentro de la clase y posteriormente se desenvuelven mejor en un ambiente latino.

One of the best things about following this structure of independent grammar and conversation classes, is that those students who display an aptitude for grammar but find conversation difficult, are assigned to a more advanced grammar class and a more basic conversation class. On the other hand, those students who are prone to grammatical errors despite being skilled in speaking, are assigned to a more basic grammar class to better understand or revise areas that are presenting problems, while attending a more advanced conversation class.

Una de las cosas más fantásticas de esta estructura de clases independientes de gramática y de conversación es que los estudiantes que muestran facilidad para entender la gramática, pero se les dificulta la conversación, son asignados una clase de gramática más avanzada y una de conversación más básica por otro lado, los alumnos que hablan bastante, pero acarrean muchos errores son asignados a una clase de gramática más básica para aprender o repasar los temas donde presentan esos errores, pero van a una clase de conversación más avanzada.
