The Past Perfect

The past perfect uses the imperfect of the verb haber and the past participle. It is translated into English as had done something.

(yo) había + past participle
(tú) habías + past participle
(él/ella/Ud.) había + past participle
(nosotros) habíamos + past participle
(ellos/ellas/Uds.) habían + past participle

  • Yo ya me había despertado cuando cantó el gallo.
  • María y yo ya habíamos ido al supermercado cuando Pablo nos llamó. Maria and I had already gone to the supermarket when Pablo called us.
  • Habías vuelto a casa cuando el conejo escapó. You had already gotten back home when the rabbit escaped.
