Spanish speakers, just like speakers of any other language, have a particular accent based upon where they were born, raised, or currently live. So what does that mean for you, a Spanish learner?
Accents in ECELA’s school locations are all different and also have varying levels of difficulty. They can be difficult both to mimic in your speaking and difficult to hear while listening to native speakers. However, listening to and deciphering accents from various regions of Latin America is an excellent way to rapidly improve your Spanish skills and be prepared to speak Spanish with native speakers once you return home.
Peru (Lima and Cusco) and Argentina (Buenos Aires and Mendoza) are good places to begin when looking for an easily-understood accent, with Peru being one of the easiest. Accents in Chile (ViƱa del Mar and Santiago) are generally considered a bit harder to understand.
As stated before, learning Spanish in multiple countries will improve your Spanish quickly, and you will also be more flexible in your Spanish understanding. Take advantage of ECELA’s multi-country programs, and you will master Spanish accents and also experience many different countries and cultures!
